When used correctly, a dictionary can be an invaluable learning tool. If you want to guarantee your child will get the most out of theirs, follow the tips below to teach them how to use it.

How to Use a Dictionary to Learn

  1. A dictionary won't be able to help your child much if they don't first know the alphabet. To ensure they learn it, sign the ABC song with them.
  2. Then, you will need to give your child the right dictionary for them. If they're just starting out, a pocket-sized, updated English dictionary should suffice.
  3. Next up, you will actually have to teach your child how to use it and explain the different components of the dictionary to them (e.g. the thesaurus, the part of speech, etc.).
  4. It's a good idea to be there with them when they do their first word search. Encourage them to search for the first letter of the unknown word. Once they find it, they can use the guide words at the top of the pages to search for the unknown word easily.
  5. As a final tip, make sure your child understands the meanings of the words they search, so they can start incorporating them into their vocabulary and improve the way in which they communicate.
